It’s time to say adieu to summer and what better way than a magnitude of live gigs throw yourself recklessly into. A lot to soak in this week as the number of out-of-town guests keeps climbing - from Catalonian post rock to Japanese city pop - and the local platters keep steady - with more and more big-scale venues looking to lend a hand to aspiring acts. Speaking of which, do check out our own farewell to summer over at NEO Bar where three wildly diverse acts look to cause all sorts of glorious musical chaos. Will be one for the books!
THURSDAY 8/24
Minimalism Garbage 极简主义垃圾(live), GerGer, 李睿洋, Pash, Extreme John @ SYSTEM系统
The latest techno cold wave act to cause a stir in China - Minimalism Garbage boils down the ingredients of the genre to its bare essentials - industrial beats, razor-sharp guitars, chugging bass lines, and slick synths - with a bit of post punk euphoria and mania bleeding into it. They’ve been on the road in support of their debut- the conceptually four-act drama in which a machine evolves into a life form - from passive repetition to thirst for vitality - allowing the sounds within to gradually become more evocative. Both a club banger and an evocative psychedelic meltdown, it should make for an intriguing live set at SYSTEM where the outfit will be joined by an array of DJs and producers. 10PM. RMB 80
Prairie Fire 燎原暗火, NewSky乐团, Some Of Popular @ Yuyintang 育音堂
Screw the latest season of The Big Bang! LoveisBug is here with the only season that matters ‘JiaoChang 叫场’ (a Chinese opera phrase) - with an assortment of rising bands across the region duking it out and looking to make their mark. Tonight heads into unknown territory with post-hardcore anthem-drivers Some of Popular, out of Shanghai, Zhenjiang pop rockers NewSky, and Hangzhou metalcore group Prairie Fire. 8:30PM. RMB 60/80/108
FRIDAY 8/25
CANCELLED 取消! Pizza Face 披萨脸, TACO TUESDAY, Green Young 绿色养殖基地 @ Bandai Namco 万代南梦宫
A rollicking good time over at Bandai Namco as Beijing’s PizzaFace joins forces with some of Shanghai’s freshest and most righteous rockers. A concoction of rock and roll in all its glory and incarnations - PizzaFace ricochets from waltzy dream-pop one moment and swan dives in a pogoing punk rock ditty the next. The band, led by the ever-fearless Spirit, takes each topsy-turvy turn with sly conviction, baiting you one moment with a serenade, and clocking you over the head with giddy ferocity Harley Quinn style the next. They join Green Young, known for their earnest, guitar-driven swaying rock and roll that taps into young adulthood with both sincerity and honesty; and Taco Tuesday, whose upbeat, frenzied pop punk keeps the energy high - they’re tight, they’re wiry and seem to be enjoying every second of it. A trifecta sure to get you pogoing. 8PM. RMB 120/160
B.L.A.K (ESP) @ Yuyintang Park 育音堂音乐公园
BLAK are a heavy instrumental rock band from Roda De Ter, Catalonia ‘blessed with an extraordinary ability to create stunningly beautiful, classical-influenced compositions with an expansive, cinematic sound’. Think dark and heavy riffs, drums that’ll shake you to your core, and harrowing vibes on an epic scale. The band is kicking off a tour across China this week so if you’re in the mood for haunting melodies primed with ’ethereal passion and heart-stopping wrath’ look no further. 8:30PM. RMB 90/120
Sequela 后遗症 @ Yuyintang 育音堂
Sequelae, out of Zhengzhou, bring their unruly yet playful post punk sound to Yuyintang. The band has been simmering under the surface for the past couple of years, but their debut studio release, released last winter, was a hell of a coming-out party - a moody, propulsive, sincere slab of electro punk led by a frontman who acts as if he’s got nothing to lose. They’re kicking off a nationwide tour this weekend. 8:30PM. RMB 100/120
The Raven 渡鸦, Cynic 犬儒, Green Deer 青鹿 @ VAS
With heavy shades of math rock, shoegaze and emo rock and bursting with a propulsive energy that ignites upon impact - Ningbo's Green Deer has been shaking up the indie scene for years with their rapturous live performances. Infectious in their ability to round up a crowd, the band will be joining long-standing rustic Beijing indie rock act The Raven, founded in the heyday of yaogun in 1996. After going their separate ways a decade back have finally started to get the band back together - so yeah big deal. Rounding out the lineup are up-and-coming Guiyang indie rockers who likewise bring a grounded story-telling approach to their music. 8PM. RMB 120/150
SATURDAY 8/26
Serious Desperado 严肃的走钢丝者, Jimao 鸡毛, Waidiren 外地人 @ NEO Bar
A deluge of noise, psychedelia, post-punk, experimentation, improvisation, and emotions, so many goddamn emotions, tonight brings together three wildly diverse acts for musical destruction of the highest order as LiveChinaMusic bids farewell to summer. On the docket, you’ve got the intense, reverb-soaked emo-inflicted noise rock of Serious Desperado, out of Changzhou, the scrappy blues-ridden ramshackle indie rock of Waidiren, and the intoxicating sprawling psych pop grooves of Jimao, from Hangzhou. Nothing but good vibes at this one folks. Things will get out of hand -- and for those with thin wallets - special ticket discounts for those willing to degrade themselves for our viewing pleasure. 8:30PM. RMB 66.6/88.8
Evening Cinema(JP), macico (JP) @ Singer Space 新歌空间
Inspired by a love of city pop Shibuya-kei, Japan’s evening cinema is a love letter to pop music in all its glory - reconstructing the funk-laced melodies of Japan’s 80s with the J-pop jams of the 90s, and of course Western pop music history (you can even hear remnants of the Beach Boys and Beatles). The band will be in town as part of their most recent China tour courtesy of Luuv Label. Joining them will be macico - a three-piece J-pop outfit from Tokyo with sewn-in elements of club, lounge and R&B into their sound. 8PM. RMB 180/210/340
Wasted Laika 丢莱卡 @ Yuyintang Park 育音堂音乐公园
Beijing art punks Wasted Laika broke through earlier last year with their long-anticipated debut which softens and enriches the band's charismatic theatricality. With an emotional through-line that strikes a raw mood, stripped back, with a touch of bittersweet romanticism - there is a lyrical depth to their songs that never feels cheap or unearned and a melodic drive whose attitude rings true and cuts deep. 8:30PM. RMB 138
SUNDAY 8/27
Atom 石璐 @ Bandai Namco 万代南梦宫
Shi Lu aka Atom - hailed as ‘China's No. 1 Female Drummer’ and known for her tremendous work with bands like Big Wave, Nova Heart, and most notable indie stalwarts Hedgehog, cut loose this year, breaking off on her own getting behind the mic for her solo effort, ‘That Is Life’ - which found the multi-talented musician firing on all cylinders, delivering a rock and roll opus unlike anything else. Catch her and her band at Bandai Namco in support of her debut LP. 8:30PM. RMB 188/288/388
